Seven suggestions to protect yourself
What is Spoofing?
When related to technology, spoofing is when someone or something pretends to be something else in an attempt to gain victims’ trust. They need this trust to gain access to the victim’s system, steal data, steal money or spread malware.
What are some forms of Spoofing?
While there are several forms of spoofing that cyber-criminals like to use, a few of them are as follows:
Email Spoofing: Sending emails with false sender addresses, basic text with no logos, many typos, or malicious links and/or attachments.
Website/URL Spoofing: Creating a website that looks legitimate but is actually malicious in an attempt to glean information from the victim.
Caller ID Spoofing: Tricking the victim’s Caller ID service into showing the call is from somewhere it is not.
Seven ways to help protect yourself from Spoofing?
Turn on spam filters in your email accounts
Don’t click any links or attachments from unknown senders in email.
Verify the email sender by calling the person who sent it to you or contact your technical support team to investigate further.
Do not click the link in an email, if you receive an email with a link for you to click from a business or company you use telling you there was an error with your account. Open a browser tab, go to the website for the company and log in to the site that way.
Check for many typos and bad grammar in the body of the message, and if the contents of the email sound too good to be true, then it usually can be classified as a spoofed email.
Check for a lock symbol or green bar and look for the URL to begin with HTTPS. If the site is not running HTTPS then it may be a malicious site.
Let unknown numbers go to voicemail. Typically, a legitimate caller with a number that you do not recognize will leave a voicemail describing what they attempted to contact you about. You can also use a reverse phone lookup website to check to see if the number is related to spam calls or if it is a legitimate number.
